Rio 2016 Women’s Basketball Tournament (day 5)

After having the spotlight to themselves yesterday, Group A have taken a well earned day of rest, leaving Group B to take to the Youth Arena floor and the USA look to go to 3-0 against European champions Serbia but first Spain look to bounce back from their loss to the Americans on Monday.

SPAIN BOUNCE BACK, BEAT CHINA

Spain used a strong fourth quarter to beat China 89-68 in the opening game of the day at the Youth Arena.

Alba Torrens led the Spaniards with a game-high 32 points in a sublime, all-round display as they used a 25-9 final period to finally create breathing room between them and the determined Chinese unit.

Spain improve to 2-1 in the pool, with China dropping to 1-2.

USA BREEZE PAST SERBIA

Diana Taurasi was once again in pole position as her game-high 25 points gave USA a 110-84 win over Eurobasket Women champions Serbia.

The latest defeat drops Serbia to 0-3 and are in danger of elimination unless they win their remaining two games in Group B. Serbia matched the USA for the first six minutes of a high-scoring first period and edged in front 17-16 on a Jelena Milovanovic free-throw.

However, with Taurasi finding her stride, the Americans finished the opening period on a 14-5 run for a 31-21 lead and kept adding to it the rest of the way.

The USA, as expected, stay unbeaten at 3-0.

CANADA REMAIN UNBEATEN, BEAT SENEGAL

Canada have made their best-ever start to the Rio Olympics, after they beat Senegal 68-58 in the final game of day five to improve to 3-0.

Tamara Tatham had an all-around performance finishing with team-high 13 points and three steals while leading all players with 10 rebounds.

Senegal are still waiting for their first win.
