Olympic Opening Ceremony paves the way for start of Basketball Tournament

Rio De Janiero has welcomed the world for the 31st Olympic Games as the basketball tournament starts later today.

The spectators inside the infamous Maracana Stadium were treated to a colourful exhibition of history, a sombre, serious display of carbon dioxide on the planet and of course, music and dance with the sell-out crowd singing along to “Mas due Nada”, perhaps Brazil’s most famous song before the athletes came out. Luis Scola was the flag bearer for Argentina in what is expected to be his last Olympics.

But now the serious business starts as Turkey take on France in the opening game of the women’s basketball tournament with the game tipping off at 17:00 CET. The first game in the men’s event will see Australia face France with the game tipping off at 19:15 CET.
