Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra addressed his team’s disappointing 121-95 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday at Scotiabank Arena. “We’re disappointed, you know, for sure,” Spoelstra said.
The Heat allowed Toronto to dominate early with a 19-2 run, turning a two-point deficit into a 13-point lead. Spoelstra pointed to defensive issues as a key factor: “Was the first half of of not setting the tone, you know, from a defensive standpoint. They had 44 relief points in the first half, 21 second chance. A bunch off cuts and then a few in transition. We just have to be better.”
Spoelstra also discussed the team’s offensive struggles against the Raptors’ length. “Like I said, we have to be able to get to our game with force. You have to do knock down a few of those to keep teams honest. But we just have to do things with more intention, you know, for sure against the teams that load up on our drives.”
The coach emphasized the team’s preparation for Thursday’s matchup. “We’re just we’re trying to get our game right and that’s what that’s what we’re focused on,” Spoelstra said. He also explained his rotation decisions: “Yeah, that was the intention for this game. And we’ll see what we do moving forward.”
Spoelstra praised the team’s effort but acknowledged they fell short in execution. “Yeah, we have a spirit. You know, our our guys bounce back, but we have to, you know, rise to the level of the competition. That’s the bottom line right now. We have these opportunities to meet our competition and we come up short. That’s what the spirit, you know, is is fine.”
Andrew Wiggins led Miami with 24 points, while Tyler Herro and Norman Powell added 14 each. Bam Adebayo was held to seven points on 2-for-14 shooting. The Heat’s record now sits at 41-38, making a deep run in the play-in tournament crucial. Spoelstra remained focused on adjustments: “We’re just going to focus on film, working tomorrow, correcting the things we need to and bringing a better game for Thursday.”
Toronto’s Scottie Barnes scored 25 points, Brandon Ingram had 23, and Jakob Poeltl added 17 as the Raptors improved to 3-0 against Miami this season.
