Lithuania – Australia warm-up game cancelled due to leaking roof in Buenos Aires

It is a rare thing that a modern basketball game is cancelled due to weather conditions, especially in high level of play. But that’s exactly what happened yesterday in Buenos Aires.

On Monday Lithuania and Australia were to square off in Estadio Cubierto de Tecnopolis, located in Argentinean capital but the game was cancelled while the teams were warming up. It is winter in Argentina and heavy rains is a common thing. As it turns out the arena roof isn’t in its best condition – the water is leaking through the roof, making the floor wet and dangerous.

After inspecting the court condition, coaches of both teams took a decision not to play due a serious risk of injury. Lithuania’s coach Jonas Kazlauskas was obviously disappointed afterwards stating that a “warmer” welcoming was expected from the locals. It wasn’t a “warm” reception indeed as Lithuania national team had to train in a non-heated gym which had the temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius.

While many Lithuanian fans stayed late to see the game which was scheduled to start at at 1AM Lithuanian time, the locals apparently knew that the game won’t take place as only around 100 people turned up to watch the game in the arena.

Argentina is set to host Lithuania tomorrow in the same arena but the game is already in doubt as more rain is forecast for the coming days.
