Detroit Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff addressed the team’s challenges after Sunday’s 112-99 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the Intuit Dome.
“I felt like the energy was good,” Bickerstaff said on the team’s start, “but we kind of played into their hands a little bit with the way they defend.”
Bickerstaff emphasized the Clippers’ defensive strengths, noting their ability to shrink the floor and protect the paint.
“They do a great job of shrinking the floor, active with their hands, getting deflections, protecting the paint,” he said. “We have to make the simple play and trust each other to execute it.”
On Kawhi Leonard’s career-high 55-point performance, Bickerstaff acknowledged the difficulty of slowing him down.
“We tried to trap him, deny him, send multiple bodies, but he’s a hell of a player,” Bickerstaff said. “Allowing him 17 free throws made it tough, and we didn’t get to it early enough.”
Bickerstaff credited Cade Cunningham for adjusting in the second half despite early foul trouble.
“Our guys did a great job of adjusting, giving him more room to go to work,” Bickerstaff said. “That’s where Cade has been best, reading defenses and making the right adjustments throughout the year.”
The coach reflected on the Pistons’ three-point defense, which allowed the Clippers to shoot 41% on 34 attempts.
“It’s how you control the bounce and where your help comes from,” he said. “Five-out spacing puts a ton of stress on your defense, and they have two guys who can put so much pressure in one-on-one situations.”
Bickerstaff also praised young players who stepped up despite the loss.
“I thought Jr. was helping us and playing well. I wanted to give him an opportunity to compete and feel the trust and confidence we have in him,” he said.
While acknowledging the outcome, Bickerstaff highlighted areas for improvement in defensive rotations and managing hot-handed opponents.
“As a coach, when a player gets hot like that, you have decisions to make about getting the ball out of his hands,” he said. “Late in the game we did a better job, but we didn’t get to it early enough.”
Detroit will aim to regroup as they face the Los Angeles Lakers in their next matchup, seeking to maintain their top Eastern Conference position.
