Dallas Mavericks’ resident German Dirk Nowitzki has decided to opt out of his contract, which makes him a free agent from July 1.

The news, first reported by ESPN comes as no surprise to many and it is also the expectation that Nowitzki will re-sign for the Mavericks but with a less lucrative contract on the table so that they can use their salary cap to build a stronger roster.

In a nutshell, the decision takes Nowitzki out of the final season of his three-year deal, worth $25million [€22.2million], which provides Dallas with enough flexibility in their salary cap to hopefully make them a contender during Nowitzki’s twilight years.

Since winning the NBA title in 2011, the Mavericks have not got past the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
