Austin Reaves reflects on Lakers win over Hornets

Austin Reaves returned from a groin injury to help the Lakers secure a 121–111 road win over Charlotte on Monday night. “Felt great to get back. Missed a few jumpers, but overall it was good to be out there and contribute,” Reaves said following the game.

Reaves discussed his cautious return, explaining he wanted to play in Atlanta but was held out as a precaution. “I really wanted to play, but everyone thought it was a little too early. It’s good to get back and finish the game today,” he added.

The guard praised the team’s defensive effort, highlighting Marcus Smart’s leadership. “Marcus gave 110% every possession. Seven steals is incredible, but his impact goes beyond the stat line,” Reaves said. He also credited Rui Hachimura for his defensive consistency, noting, “He’s super locked in, pays attention to the little details, and puts himself in the right spot. It’s been really good for us all season.”

Reaves reflected on Luka Doncic’s third-quarter dunk, sharing a lighthearted moment. “I knew he was about to try to dunk this one. It was fun to watch. I like layups—they’re all worth two points,” he joked, referencing a previous friendly debate over who has more dunks this season.

Reaves emphasized the importance of ball security in the win. “We had seven assists with only one turnover tonight. Playing against a team like OKC, who pressures hard, you have to make the right plays and protect the ball,” he said, looking ahead to Wednesday’s matchup in Oklahoma City.

He also expressed excitement about LeBron James returning to practice. “Can’t wait for him to come back. He’s going to help the team in every way because he knows the game so well,” Reaves said.

The Lakers’ win improved their record to 8–3, with six victories in their last seven games. Hachimura added 21 points, Smart contributed seven steals and a crucial fourth-quarter three, while Reaves finished with 24 points and seven assists. Charlotte, led by Miles Bridges’ 34 points, fell to 3–7 without LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.

Los Angeles continues its road trip Wednesday in Oklahoma City, aiming to maintain momentum after strong performances from Doncic, Reaves, and the supporting cast.
