Ja Morant admits he’s lost his basketball joy

Ja Morant returned to action Monday night following his one-game suspension, but the Memphis Grizzlies fell 114–106 to the Detroit Pistons.

In his return, the 26-year-old guard posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, but the loss extended the team’s early-season struggles.

After the game, Morant’s postgame remarks reflected a subdued tone. When asked if he was playing basketball with his usual joy, he gave a short response: “No.”

He was similarly reserved when questioned about his current relationship with the organization.

“If I didn’t have a good relationship with [them], I wouldn’t talk to them at all,” Morant said, offering little detail but suggesting tension remains under the surface.

Reports from earlier in the week indicated that Morant had grown frustrated with head coach Tuomas Iisalo’s rotation decisions, which reportedly led to a heated exchange between the two following Friday’s loss to the Lakers.

Adding to the uncertainty, it was reported in June that the Grizzlies had made the internal decision not to build their roster around Morant moving forward, signaling a potential shift in the franchise’s long-term direction.
