Hawks waive MJ Walker ahead of 2025–26 season

The Atlanta Hawks have waived guard-forward MJ Walker, the team announced as part of its final roster adjustments before the start of the 2025–26 NBA season.

Walker, 26, had joined the Hawks earlier this preseason alongside Lamont Butler and Deivon Smith. His release comes as Atlanta trims its roster to meet league requirements ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The Georgia native brings previous NBA experience, having appeared in two games with the Phoenix Suns during the 2021–22 season. He spent most of his professional career in the NBA G League, where he played 132 games for the Westchester Knicks and Greensboro Swarm.

Across his G League tenure, Walker averaged 10.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 25 minutes per game, showcasing his ability as a physical two-way wing and perimeter scorer.

Before turning professional, Walker played four seasons at Florida State, where he made 82 starts in 120 appearances under head coach Leonard Hamilton. He averaged nine points, two rebounds, and 1.6 assists per contest and earned All-ACC honors twice while helping the Seminoles reach three NCAA Tournament berths.

For Walker, the next step could involve joining the College Park Skyhawks, Atlanta’s G League affiliate, where he would have the chance to continue developing within the organization’s system.
