Chicago Bulls star guard Coby White remains on the mend as he works his way back from a calf strain that he suffered in August, according to Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times.

Head coach Billy Donovan provided an update, saying White has resumed running and shooting, and there’s optimism he might return to action in time for the Bulls’ final preseason contest on October 16.

The team is also hopeful he’ll be ready for the regular season opener six days later.

Donovan explained how the injury has lingered longer than expected, especially after players returned to the gym following Labor Day.

‘‘The problem is when they all came back after Labor Day, the calf issue was bothering him,’’ Donovan said.

‘‘Treatment, rehab, all that stuff. And then every time they kind of ramped him up a little bit, it kind of always got to a place where he felt tightness. It wasn’t pain, but every time they got to this threshold, he felt tightness. So they basically just shut him down.’’

White has played 6 seasons for the Bulls. He has averaged 15.2 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.6 rebounds in 422 regular-season games.
