Los Angeles Lakers legend James Worthy has given his approval of the team’s recent addition of Marcus Smart, pointing to the veteran guard’s leadership and defensive impact.

Speaking on ESPN LA, Worthy compared Smart’s arrival to Phil Jackson’s decision years ago to bring in Ron Harper, emphasizing how locker room presence can be just as valuable as on-court contributions.

“I remember when Phil Jackson brought Ron Harper here. Ron could still play but more importantly he was really good in the locker room,” Worthy said, via HoopsHype. “Now you bring in Marcus Smart, who can still play defense savvy.”

Smart joined the Lakers in July on a two-year, $11 million contract after being waived by the Washington Wizards following a midseason trade. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year will provide toughness and experience to a roster already headlined by LeBron James and Luka Doncic.

The 31-year-old guard has played 11 NBA seasons, averaging 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game across stints with the Celtics, Grizzlies, and Wizards. He also carries extensive playoff experience, with 108 postseason appearances.

For Los Angeles, the move addresses a need for perimeter defense and veteran leadership after a disappointing finish to the 2024–25 season. The Lakers have retooled under head coach JJ Redick, blending established stars with younger talent like Bronny James and Dalton Knecht.

Smart’s defensive versatility allows him to guard multiple positions, a skill set that complements Doncic’s offensive workload and gives the Lakers flexibility against elite Western Conference guards. His presence is also expected to ease pressure on Austin Reaves and Gabe Vincent in the backcourt rotation.
