Tyler Herro undergoes foot surgery, out to start Heat season

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro has undergone surgery on his left foot and ankle, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. The procedure was performed this week after non-surgical treatments failed to resolve ongoing discomfort.

Herro had been dealing with an ankle and foot impingement since the middle of the summer. In recent weeks, he tried platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections, but the pain persisted and surgery was deemed necessary.

The setback means Herro will not be available when the Heat open the 2025–26 NBA season. A timetable for his return has not been finalized, though the team expects him to miss the start of training camp and likely part of the early schedule.

Last season, Herro played 77 games and delivered one of the strongest campaigns of his career. He averaged 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range.

The 25-year-old guard has been a central figure in Miami’s offense since his arrival in 2019. Across six NBA seasons, he has averaged 19.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while earning one All-Star appearance.

Herro has also made an impact in the postseason, most notably during the Heat’s 2020 run to the NBA Finals, when he averaged 16.0 points per game as a rookie. His playoff career numbers stand at 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 50 appearances.

Miami now enters the new season facing questions about backcourt depth. Terry Rozier, Davion Mitchell, and rookie Kasparas Jakucionis are expected to see more minutes in Herro’s absence.

The Heat’s roster underwent significant changes over the past year, highlighted by Jimmy Butler’s trade to the Golden State Warriors. Herro’s injury puts even more pressure on Erik Spoelstra’s squad as they begin their 38th season in franchise history.
