After the Phoenix Suns announced they were trading Kevin Durant, the superstar forward quickly outlined a list of preferred destinations. Included on that list were teams where he would also be open to signing an extension.
The Houston Rockets were among the teams he favored, and that’s where the veteran forward ultimately landed.
As of now, Durant and the Rockets have yet to finalize an extension, but one is widely expected in the near future. The two sides have been engaged in ongoing discussions about a new contract, though they have not yet agreed on specific terms.
Reports suggest that Durant is not necessarily aiming for a maximum salary deal, which would pay him approximately $120.5 million over the course of two seasons.
Because he is approaching the NBA’s Over-38 rule – which limits contract length for players over that age – he can only sign a three-year deal.
Considering the current season counts toward that total, any new agreement would effectively add just two more years to his existing contract.
If Durant and the Rockets settle on a deal below the maximum, it would provide Houston with some flexibility on their salary cap.
