Eastern Conference scout views Heat as solid play-in contender

The Miami Heat’s outlook for the 2025–26 season received a measured assessment from a longtime Eastern Conference scout, who spoke with Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

According to the scout, Miami’s roster changes — highlighted by the addition of Norman Powell in a three-team trade last month — position them in the middle tier of the Eastern Conference.

“I see six teams for sure [better]: New York, Cleveland, Orlando, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee,” the scout told the Miami Herald. “Philadelphia is better if they’re healthy. So I would say the Heat’s a solid play-in team, in the same ballpark as Indiana and potentially better than Boston.”

The scout projected Miami to land in the No. 7 to No. 9 range, with an approximate .500 record. He added that a 45-win season would be considered a success.

Miami’s roster features All-Star center Bam Adebayo, guard Tyler Herro, and Powell as the primary offensive options. The team also includes Andrew Wiggins, who the scout described as “meh at this point,” along with promising young center Kel’el Ware.

Miami made several offseason moves beyond Powell’s arrival. They acquired Simone Fontecchio in a trade with Detroit and re-signed guard Davion Mitchell. In the 2025 NBA Draft, the Heat selected Lithuanian point guard Kasparas Jakucionis with the 20th overall pick, acquired via the Jimmy Butler trade to Golden State.

The scout characterized Chicago as “mediocre” and suggested Miami might be slightly better, but not among the East’s top tier. He noted that while the Heat have three very good players, depth and consistency remain concerns.

Miami is entering its 38th NBA season under head coach Erik Spoelstra, who will lead a roster blending veteran experience with young prospects.
