Elan Chalon to host FIBA Europe Cup Final Four

FIBA Europe announced on Thursday that Elan Chalon and the French city of Chalon-sur-Saône will host the 2016 FIBA Europe Cup Final Four.

Elan Chalon will organise the event in their home venue, Coliseum, with a capacity of 5,000 spectators.

This is the first time since 2001 that a French city will play host to a FIBA club competition Final Four tournament. Back then the Final Four of the then FIBA Suproleague was organised in Paris.

The hosts Elan Chalon (FRA) will meet Openjobmetis Varese (ITA) in one of the two Semi-Finals of the Final Four. In the second Semi-Final Fraport Skyliners (GER) will match up against BC Enisey (RUS).

Elan Chalon will be looking to make amends for the EuroChallenge Final Four in 2012 when they lost the title game to Besiktas (TUR). The Skyliners also come with previous Final Four experience, having finished fourth in the EuroChallenge in Trabzon last season.

Elan Chalon and the Frankfurt club were two of the three candidacies to host this season’s Final Four – the third being Varese.

“Three participating clubs have sent some strong bids to host the event, and it was not an easy task to choose between them,” commented FIBA Executive Director Europe, Kamil Novak.

“We are pleased that a basketball Final Four returns to France after many years; we are certain that Elan Chalon are ready to organise a great event and and we would like to extend our thanks to all applicants.”
