After a standout comeback season in Philadelphia, forward Guerschon Yabusele found himself at the center of a fast-moving free agency race – and ultimately, the allure of New York City proved impossible to resist.
Yabusele recently revealed that he was on the verge of signing with the Denver Nuggets before a sudden offer from the Knicks changed everything. Time was of the essence.
“It happened really fast,” Yabusele recounted. “Once I got the call from New York, they told me I had two hours to make up my mind. Two hours! I was also in talks with Denver at the time, but when an opportunity like New York comes up, you have to act. It’s a chance you don’t want to let slip – especially with everything that comes with living and playing there.”
Despite the Nuggets being a perennial Western Conference powerhouse, the combination of lifestyle, team culture, and legacy tipped the scales in the Knicks’ favor.
Yabusele signed a two-year deal with New York, where he will join a team fresh off an Eastern Conference Finals run and now bolstered by key offseason additions, including Jordan Clarkson.
“New York is a team on the rise. You can see that,” he said. “They’re building something really strong – not just star players, but a real collective identity. I see a team that shares the ball, that defends together, and that’s chasing a championship. That’s the kind of team I want to be a part of.”
Yabusele also admitted that the city itself played a major role in his decision. The idea of living in one of the world’s most iconic cities, combined with the chance to play under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, was simply too compelling to pass up.
“Every NBA player dreams of playing at Madison Square Garden,” he said. “That includes me. It’s not just another arena – it’s history, it’s energy, it’s New York. I’m proud to wear this jersey.”
