The Orlando Magic and veteran big man Moe Wagner have come to terms on a one-year contract worth $5 million, signaling the team’s continued belief in his value and potential, despite a major injury setback last season.
While the Magic had initially declined Wagner’s team option earlier this offseason, league sources say the move was more procedural than reflective of his standing with the team.
Orlando had consistently expressed interest in bringing him back and was always expected to re-sign him under a revised deal.
Wagner, 28, was in the midst of a career-best season when misfortune struck. Just days before Christmas, he suffered a torn ACL that ended his campaign prematurely.
Up to that point, he had emerged as a key contributor off the bench, providing efficient scoring and energy in limited minutes.
Over 30 games, Wagner posted averages of 12.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in just 18.8 minutes per game, showcasing both his offensive skillset and hustle.
Before the injury, Wagner had carved out a strong role in head coach Jamahl Mosley’s rotation as a spark plug and versatile frontcourt option.
His chemistry with his younger brother, Franz Wagner, one of the Magic’s rising stars, was also considered an intangible asset in the locker room.
By bringing Wagner back on a short-term deal, the Magic appear to be betting on his full recovery and ability to return to form.
The contract also gives Orlando flexibility, while providing Wagner a platform to reestablish himself ahead of 2026 free agency.
Wagner is expected to begin his rehab with the team this summer, and depending on recovery progress, could rejoin the rotation at some point during the 2025–26 season.
