Bobby Webster is set to continue in his role as general manager of the Toronto Raptors, even as the franchise undergoes a leadership transition following the departure of longtime president Masai Ujiri.
The team, which is entering a new phase of its rebuild, will begin its search for a new team president right away.
“As we plan for the franchise’s future, and its return to the NBA Playoffs, a search for the successor as president of the Raptors, led by CAA Executive Search, will begin immediately,” said Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President & CEO Keith Pelley.
While Ujiri’s departure signals the end of an era in Toronto, MLSE expressed strong confidence in Webster’s leadership and the current front office.
According to Pelley:
“We are confident that the Raptors organization, under the guidance of Bobby and his team, is in a great place. They have a plan in place for next season and beyond as the team continues its rebuild, and we have confidence in their ability to execute and ultimately, to excel. We feel the team is in a strong, stable place, and we believe the addition of a new president will continue to move the Raptors forward, towards our next NBA championship.”
Webster has long been considered one of the top executives in the Raptors’ organization. He was Masai Ujiri’s first major front office hire back in 2013, when Ujiri arrived from the Denver Nuggets.
Webster steadily climbed the ranks before being promoted to general manager in June 2017, following the departure of Jeff Weltman to the Orlando Magic.
Now, with a new president on the horizon and the franchise focused on returning to playoff contention, Webster will play a key role in shaping the next era of Raptors basketball.
