The New York Knicks are expected to interview New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego for their head coaching vacancy, according to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic.
Borrego, known for his analytical mindset and offensive acumen, joins a growing list of candidates under consideration by New York’s front office.
Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown are believed to be the frontrunners but the Knicks are continuing to cast a wide net as they prepare for the 2025-26 season.
Borrego was a finalist for the Los Angeles Lakers job in 2024 before the franchise ultimately hired JJ Redick.
A longtime assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, Borrego previously served as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022, compiling a 138–163 record.
He is currently on staff with Willie Green in New Orleans, though the Pelicans finished this past season with a Western Conference-worst 21–61 record.
Borrego is represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a firm with longstanding ties to the Knicks’ front office.
While New York’s primary targets remain Jenkins and Brown, the organization is also monitoring Jason Kidd’s situation in Dallas, as his future with the Mavericks remains unresolved.
The Knicks are coming off their best postseason run since 2000, finishing third in the Eastern Conference at 51–31 and advancing to the conference finals before falling to the Indiana Pacers in six games.
