The Miami Heat have emerged as a serious contender to land Kevin Durant, with a potential trade package that could appeal most to the Phoenix Suns, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

Stein reported on his Substack that Miami remains in “legitimate pursuit” of the 15-time All-Star and could present the most favorable return for Phoenix, which is aiming to finalize a deal before the June 25 NBA Draft.

Durant, 36, remains under contract through the 2025–26 season but is reportedly open to committing long-term to Miami, San Antonio, or Houston—his three preferred destinations, per Shams Charania.

The Suns are prioritizing the best possible return rather than catering solely to Durant’s preferences. Their front office is focused on acquiring a mix of young talent, expiring contracts, and draft capital.

Miami previously pursued Durant at the trade deadline and re-engaged in discussions during offseason talks that included Jimmy Butler, according to Stein. That sustained interest could give the Heat an edge.

San Antonio remains in the mix, with Phoenix entertaining offers centered on veterans like Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell. However, the Spurs are reportedly unwilling to include Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle or the No. 2 overall pick.

The Rockets also loom as a viable destination after a 52-win season. With a deep young core and available assets, Houston has the flexibility to make a competitive bid. Still, Miami’s combination of star power and win-now urgency could be more appealing.

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 75 games this season, maintaining his production despite the Suns’ disappointing 36–46 finish and failure to reach the postseason.

Phoenix recently fired head coach Mike Budenholzer and is preparing for a significant roster overhaul. Multiple outlets have confirmed that the franchise wants to resolve the Durant situation before the draft.

While other suitors like Minnesota and Toronto have shown interest, neither appears to be among Durant’s preferred landing spots, nor are they considered frontrunners.

Miami narrowly secured the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference and has been exploring ways to reshape its roster. A Durant acquisition would immediately elevate the Heat’s outlook for next season.
