The Dallas Mavericks have added a major piece to their coaching staff, agreeing to terms with longtime NBA coach Jay Triano.
As reported by The Dallas Morning News, Triano will serve as the second-lead assistant behind Sean Sweeney on Jason Kidd’s bench.
The move signals a strategic shift as the Mavericks attempt to stabilize their staff following a turbulent 2024–25 campaign.
Triano, 66, brings over two decades of NBA coaching experience, including head coaching roles with the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns.
He most recently served as associate head coach with the Sacramento Kings, working under Mike Brown for the past two seasons.
Triano’s addition strengthens a Mavericks bench that already includes assistants Sean Sweeney and Jared Dudley.
With Dallas coming off a disappointing finish — missing the playoffs after a play-in elimination — the organization is focused on reshaping its structure.
Despite injuries to Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, and the midseason trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers, the Mavericks managed to qualify for the play-in.
Triano is known for his emphasis on ball movement and player development, traits Dallas may prioritize as it prepares to integrate the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Triano previously coached in Portland, Charlotte, and Sacramento, and holds the distinction of being the first Canadian-born head coach in NBA history.
His career began in college basketball with Simon Fraser before transitioning to the NBA in 2002 with the Raptors as an assistant.
