Panathinaikos ease to 17th Greek Cup victory in Athens

Panathinaikos scooped the first trophy of the Greek season by easing past Faros Keratsiniou 101-54 for the biggest margin of victory at any final played between domestic teams in Greece.

Faros had already performed above all expectation bringing down PAOK for the semi-finals but the Greens did not get put off by the calls of a possible upset, which would have taken world basketball by storm, let alone in Greece.

Instead, Panathinaikos started strong, setting their own pace and taking advantage of their opponent’s over-thinking on offence and lack of experience, got in front 16-3 with four alley-oops included, achieving to get exactly at the position they wanted.

Half time was 57-26 and from then on it was just a matter of time until Panathinaikos captured their 17th Greek Cup leaving Olympiacos behind with nine.

The final score: 101-54 is the biggest of any final of the competition, but Faros players will keep this experience for a lifetime and will look to use it during the next season since they will play in the first division. Dimitris Diamantidis (became the first player to win 10 Greek Cups) and Kakiouzis were honored for their involvement in the Greek Basketball both in club and national level. Kakiouzis was captain of the Greek national teams during the Eurobasket in Belgrade where the Greeks climbed to the top and for many more years after.

Player stats don’t really mean a lot since the game was pretty one-sided but the player with the best stat line was James Gist with 13 points, four rebounds and seven assists.
