Lou Williams floats LaMelo Ball-Clippers trade scenario

Former Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams believes the Los Angeles Clippers could target LaMelo Ball in a major offseason move.

During an appearance on Run It Back, Williams said, via HoopsHype, “I can see the Clippers making a play for a premier point guard… I can see the Clippers making a play for LaMelo Ball—and him being able to go home and do something special at the crib.”

Williams emphasized that the Clippers have been exploring ways to upgrade their point guard spot and hinted that Ball could help shift James Harden back into a more natural scoring role.

“If you can slide James Harden back over to the two… that may help them,” Williams said, referencing how the veteran has taken on more of a facilitator role during the 2024–25 campaign.

Ball, 23, just completed his fifth NBA season and the first year of a five-year, $204 million max extension with the Charlotte Hornets.

He averaged 25.2 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.9 rebounds across 47 games before being shut down in March for wrist and ankle procedures.

The Hornets have missed the playoffs for nine straight seasons and last offseason changed direction by hiring Charles Lee as head coach.

Williams also noted that Charlotte’s draft strategy could indicate a willingness to move on from Ball if they select a point guard early in the 2025 NBA Draft.

“They’re showing you their hand,” he said, suggesting the Hornets could be open to trade discussions if they pivot toward a rebuild.
