Mavericks win 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, secure No. 1 overall pick

The Dallas Mavericks have landed the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after winning the lottery held Monday night.

Despite finishing 10th in the Western Conference with a 39-43 record, Dallas vaulted to the No. 1 overall selection, overtaking teams with worse records and longer odds.

The San Antonio Spurs will select second, followed by the Philadelphia 76ers at No. 3 and the Charlotte Hornets at No. 4.

The Utah Jazz round out the top five picks in a draft class headlined by top prospect Cooper Flagg.

Flagg has been widely projected as the likely No. 1 pick thanks to his versatility, elite shot-making, and advanced feel for the game on both ends of the floor.

The Mavericks, who were eliminated in the Play-In Tournament, now have a prime opportunity to pair a top-tier young talent with their veteran core.

This marks the first time Dallas will pick No. 1 overall since the franchise’s inception in 1980.

The team’s lottery luck comes after a season in which they ranked 10th in the West and posted a slightly negative point differential after trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis.

In addition to Flagg, other projected top-five prospects include Dylan Harper, VJ Edgecombe, Ace Bailey, and Derik Queen.

Harper is considered the top guard in the class, while Edgecombe’s two-way potential has drawn interest from lottery teams.

Bailey’s combination of size and perimeter scoring makes him one of the more intriguing forward options, despite questions about his shot selection.

Queen, after a standout Big Ten tournament run, has emerged as a skilled big man with offensive polish and playmaking versatility.
