Fred VanVleet and the Houston Rockets agreed to postpone the decision deadline on his $44.9 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

Originally set for Friday, the deadline has now been moved to June 29, giving both sides more time to evaluate their options, whether that means exercising the current deal or potentially negotiating a longer-term agreement.

VanVleet, who prominent agent Rich Paul, has publicly expressed his desire to remain in Houston. Likewise, Rockets general manager Rafael Stone has made it clear that maintaining roster stability will be a key priority this offseason.

This delay in the option decision aligns with that approach, allowing for greater flexibility as the team maps out its offseason strategy.

The move could also signal that the Rockets are leaving room for possible roster changes.

With the draft and free agency approaching, Houston is expected to explore the trade market, and extending the decision timeline gives the front office valuable breathing room to maneuver.

In his second year with the team, VanVleet played in 60 games, averaging 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists over 35.2 minutes per game.

He originally joined the Rockets during the 2023 offseason, signing a three-year, $130 million deal after Houston shifted away from pursuing James Harden with their available cap space.

This recent development suggests both the player and the organization are open to a continued partnership, while also remaining pragmatic about potential alternatives.
