Karl-Anthony Towns reflects on Knicks’ Game 1 win

In a thrilling Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the New York Knicks battled back from a 20-point deficit to defeat the Boston Celtics 108-105 in overtime. Karl-Anthony Towns played a pivotal role in the win, contributing 14 points and 13 rebounds, and after the game, he shared his thoughts on his team’s resilience and defensive effort.

“We kept fighting and gave ourselves a chance,” Towns said. Despite facing adversity, including being down double digits and dealing with foul trouble, the Knicks displayed remarkable grit. Towns credited the team’s determination, especially in the third quarter, where they avoided letting the Celtics extend their lead.

On whether the Game 1 win builds confidence for the Knicks, Towns remarked, “Winning a game makes you feel good, but you know as quick as you win, you can lose the next one.” He acknowledged that while the victory was important, the team must stay focused on their goal and not get complacent. With the Celtics being the defending champions, Towns knows they will come back hungry for Game 2.

The Knicks’ defense was crucial in the victory, particularly in the second half. Towns reflected on the team’s defensive execution, saying, “We did a great job of putting pressure on them and making it tough for them to get clean looks.”

While Boston’s shooters, like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, are known for their shooting prowess, the Knicks made sure to contest every shot. Towns pointed out how they were able to disrupt Boston’s usual offensive flow, forcing them into difficult shot selections.

Despite the challenges, including missed free throws and key players like Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart dealing with foul issues, Towns emphasized the team’s unity. “In this locker room, we know we all we got,” he said. The Knicks stayed connected throughout the game, playing for each other and never losing faith, even as the Celtics attempted to seize control.

Towns also praised his teammates for stepping up when it mattered most. Mikal Bridges, who played 51 minutes, made crucial plays down the stretch, including a steal that sealed the game. “This team showed up when we needed it,” Towns said, pointing out how every player contributed to the win.

The Knicks’ win was a testament to their resilience and ability to execute under pressure. As Towns put it, “We’ve done a great job all year of putting ourselves in a position to have a chance to win, and we did that tonight.”

With Game 2 set for Wednesday in Boston, the Knicks will look to carry the momentum forward as they aim to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.
