The Phoenix Suns are making a significant front office move by promoting Brian Gregory to general manager.

In his new role, Gregory will oversee all aspects of the team’s basketball operations, stepping into a leadership position previously held by James Jones.

James Jones, who has served as the Suns’ general manager since 2019 and helped shape the team into a Western Conference contender, will now move into a new capacity as a senior advisor within the organization.

His transition signals a shift in the team’s executive structure while retaining his experience and institutional knowledge.

Gregory initially joined the Suns in June 2024 as the vice president of player programming, bringing with him a deep background in basketball development and coaching.

He has longstanding ties to Suns owner Mat Ishbia, having been an assistant coach at Michigan State University during Ishbia’s time as a player there.

Gregory later led college programs as head coach at Dayton, Georgia Tech, and the University of South Florida, building a reputation for player development and leadership.

With this promotion, the Suns are placing trust in Gregory’s blend of coaching experience and personal connections within the franchise, signaling a new chapter in the team’s strategic direction under his guidance.
