Ja Morant fined $75K for gun gesture

The NBA has fined Ja Morant $75,000 for making a gun gesture during the Memphis Grizzlies’ 110-108 win over the Miami Heat on April 3.

In a statement, NBA Executive Vice President Joe Dumars confirmed the punishment, noting that Morant had been previously warned about the gesture.

The fine comes amid an ongoing investigation into Morant’s behavior on the court. During a game against the Golden State Warriors, the Grizzlies star was seen making a finger gun gesture toward the opposing bench.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the league is also reviewing a similar motion made by Warriors guard Buddy Hield.

This marks another controversy for Morant, who has faced multiple suspensions for gun-related incidents over the past two seasons.

Despite the NBA’s actions, Morant appeared unbothered by the situation. Shortly after reports surfaced about the investigation, he posted on X, writing, “ja this .. ja that .. 😂.”

While he downplayed the situation, league officials are expected to meet with all involved parties to determine whether further discipline is necessary.

Memphis, currently 45-32, sits in sixth place in the Western Conference standings. With only a few games left in the regular season, any potential suspension for Morant could impact their playoff positioning.

The Grizzlies are already navigating internal turmoil after parting ways with head coach Taylor Jenkins, adding another layer of uncertainty to their postseason push.

The All-Star guard has a history of disciplinary actions related to gun-related incidents. In 2023, he was suspended for eight games after flashing a firearm on Instagram Live. Last season, the NBA handed him a 25-game suspension for a similar incident.

Now, with another controversy looming, Morant’s actions remain under the league’s microscope.

The timing of the investigation is critical, as Memphis is in a tight race with the Warriors and Timberwolves.
