Former NBA champion Ron Harper shared his perspective on LeBron James’ skill set, placing the Lakers star in a different category from players like Grant Hill, Scottie Pippen, and Penny Hardaway. Speaking with NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Harper compared James to legends known for their playmaking ability.

“Well, I don’t know if LeBron is a better athlete than what Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway was and what Tracy McGrady was,” Harper said. He then grouped James with Oscar Robertson and Magic Johnson, emphasizing his passing ability rather than scoring.

James, now 40 years old, continues to produce elite numbers in his 22nd NBA season. He is averaging 24.9 points, 8 rebounds, and 8.5 assists per game while leading the Lakers to a 40-21 record, the second-best mark in the Western Conference.

Harper acknowledged the scoring abilities of Hill and McGrady but noted that their playmaking was not on the same level as James. He also highlighted that opinions on player comparisons can vary without being definitively right or wrong.

Robertson and Johnson, both Hall of Famers, revolutionized the role of big guards who could dominate multiple facets of the game. Harper’s comparison suggests that James fits that mold rather than being classified strictly among athletic wings.

James has built a résumé that includes four NBA championships, four MVP awards, and the all-time scoring record. Despite his scoring prowess, he has consistently prioritized making plays for teammates, reinforcing Harper’s assertion that passing is a defining aspect of his game.

The Lakers have surged in recent weeks, winning eight straight games as James continues to lead the way alongside Luka Doncic. His ability to impact the game at a high level even at 40 aligns with the sustained greatness of Robertson and Johnson in their respective eras.

Harper, who won three championships with the Chicago Bulls and two with the Lakers, played alongside some of the game’s greatest talents. His insight adds another layer to the ongoing discussion about where James ranks among all-time greats.

As the Lakers push for a deep playoff run, James remains a central figure in their success. Whether viewed as a dominant scorer or an elite playmaker, his impact on the game remains undeniable.
