Vassell drops career-high 37 points as Spurs dominate Nets

Devin Vassell had a career-high 37 points and 10 rebounds, leading the San Antonio Spurs (26-34) to a commanding 127-113 victory over the Brooklyn Nets (21-40) on Tuesday night. The Spurs earned their second win in seven games, while the Nets suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

Brooklyn’s offense was led by Cam Thomas, who scored 24 points. Cameron Johnson chipped in with 17, but the team struggled to keep pace with San Antonio’s high-scoring performance. The Nets fell further out of the Eastern Conference playoff race, now 2 1/2 games behind 10th place.

Vassell’s stellar performance included an impressive 8-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc. The Spurs shot a total of 18-for-39 on three-pointers, contributing to their dominant win.

San Antonio led by as many as 25 points, with a balanced offensive effort from several players. Stephon Castle scored 17 points, while De’Aaron Fox and Keldon Johnson each added 15. Biyombo, who signed a contract for the rest of the season just hours before the game, contributed 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Despite missing star center Victor Wembanyama, who is sidelined for the season with a blood clot in his right shoulder, the Spurs dominated the paint, outscoring the Nets 62-40. The team also showed off its passing ability with 37 assists, setting a new NBA record with 200 consecutive games with 20 or more assists.

Chris Paul, in addition to his 11 points, made history with a 3-pointer in the second quarter, becoming the 20,000th 3-pointer in Spurs franchise history.

For the Nets, D’Angelo Russell struggled, scoring 12 points on 4-for-11 shooting and contributing only four assists. The Nets’ shooting woes continued, as they shot just 34% from three-point range, making only 17 of their 50 attempts. The Spurs’ defense also limited their offensive flow, forcing the Nets into 16 turnovers.

San Antonio maintained its lead throughout the second half, securing the victory with a strong fourth-quarter performance. The win helped the Spurs hold off any late rally from Brooklyn, who continued to fight but couldn’t overcome the Spurs’ overwhelming attack.
