Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson has never been shy about giving credit where it’s due. In a conversation with LandonBuford.com, Thompson expressed his admiration for Diana Taurasi, who announced her retirement recently, calling her one of the greatest basketball players ever.

“Oh, Diana Taurasi, I mean, one of the greatest basketball players of all time,” Thompson said. “I mean, six gold medals. I think a three-time champ, won at UConn probably at least two, three times. So, I’ve been watching Diana since I was a little kid, and she’s one of the greatest basketball players of all time. No question about that.”

Klay Thompson Reacts to Diana Taurasi's Retirement: "One of the Greatest of All Time!"

Taurasi’s Legendary Career

Taurasi has been the emblem of women’s basketball for nearly twenty years and leaves an unparalleled legacy. She was a three-time WNBA champion with the Phoenix Mercury, has won the WNBA Finals MVP twice, and holds the record for the league’s all-time leading scorer. One of the most accomplished athletes in basketball history is cemented by her six Olympic gold medals with Team USA on the international stage. Taurasi excelled in college basketball while playing for the UConn Huskies, winning three consecutive NCAA titles from 2002 to 2004 under legendary coach Geno Auriemma.

Klay’s Respect for the Greats

Thompson’s recognition of Taurasi evidences the growing respect between men’s and women’s basketball. Having been raised in a basketball-centric family- his father, Mychal Thompson, played in the NBA- Klay has long appreciated greatness, regardless of league or gender. Taurasi’s admiration is in line with a broader trend among NBA players, including LeBron James and Stephen Curry, who continue to emphasize the achievements of WNBA stars. Taurasi’s departure from basketball will continue to impact generations of players, including those who, like Thompson, grew up watching her redefine what was possible in basketball. Taurasi’s influence is undeniable as the basketball world bids farewell one of its most decorated champions.
