Derrick Williams has signed with the Mets de Guaynabo ahead of the 2025 season, as announced by the Puerto Rican team via Instagram (hat tip to Sportando).
Williams, who was drafted immediately after Kyrie Irving in the 2011 NBA Draft, played in 428 NBA games over seven seasons from 2011 to 2018 before moving on to play in Europe for several years.
The 34-year-old forward, who will celebrate his birthday in May, last played for Panathinaikos in Greece during the 2022/23 season.
In addition to Williams’ signing, the Mets de Guaynabo made another major roster announcement this week.
The team revealed that they have reacquired the rights to four-time NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins, who previously played for the Mets in 2023.
While Cousins’ return is not yet confirmed, former NBA guard J.J. Barea, who is currently serving as the Mets’ head coach, mentioned a few days ago that the big man’s return isn’t set in stone.
The 34-year-old former center has expressed interest in rejoining the team in Puerto Rico for the upcoming season.
Barea and Cousins were scheduled to meet this week to discuss the potential for the veteran’s return to the Mets.
