San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder.
The condition was discovered following his return to San Antonio after the All-Star break in San Francisco, forcing the team to shut him down for the rest of the campaign.
Wembanyama’s second NBA season comes to an abrupt end after an impressive showing in 46 games, where he averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks while logging 33.2 minutes per game.
The 21-year-old phenom was on track to earn an All-NBA selection, but his early exit means he will fall short of the league’s 65-game minimum requirement for award eligibility. His absence will leave a spot open for another player on the prestigious team.
Additionally, Wembanyama was widely considered the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year, making his untimely departure a significant blow both for him and the Spurs.
