Stephen A. Smith weighed in on the ongoing debate about the NBA’s next face, making it clear he does not believe an international player can take that role. The ESPN analyst shared his thoughts after Anthony Edwards said he sees Victor Wembanyama as the league’s future centerpiece.

“I don’t believe an international player can be the face of the NBA,” Smith said. “I know they’re global iconic figures, their popularity extends globally, but the NBA is an American-born sport.”

Smith’s stance sparked debate, as international stars have dominated the league in recent years. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid, three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo have been among the NBA’s biggest stars.

Edwards’ comments came amid discussions about his rapid rise in the league. The Minnesota Timberwolves star has led his team to a strong season and is widely regarded as one of the brightest young players. However, he downplayed his own candidacy as the next face of the NBA, pointing to Wembanyama instead.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has been one of the most hyped prospects in league history. His unique blend of size, skill, and versatility has positioned him as a potential generational player.

The debate over the NBA’s face is ongoing, with American-born stars like Edwards, Jayson Tatum, and Zion Williamson competing for the title.

Smith made it clear he hopes Edwards reconsiders his stance. “My wish is that Anthony Edwards changes his mind,” he said.
