The Houston Rockets and Fred VanVleet are reportedly keen to extend their partnership beyond the current contract, with both sides expressing mutual interest in continuing their relationship, sources told Jake Fischer.
VanVleet, who signed with the Rockets in the 2023 offseason, agreed to a three-year, $130 million deal, which also includes a player option for the 2025-2026 season worth $44.9 million.
While the Rockets could opt to decline that player option, they are also open to negotiating a longer-term, multi-year extension with VanVleet. However, Houston’s financial situation is evolving.
As the team looks ahead to the upcoming season, their payroll will increase significantly with the upcoming contract extensions for key players such as Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun.
Moreover, the Rockets have several important members of their young core – including Jabari Smith Jr. and Amen Thompson – who will be eligible for extensions in 2025 and 2026, which could drive up their salaries.
VanVleet, who is represented by Rich Paul and Erika Ruiz of Klutch Sports, has been a steady presence on the court for Houston since his arrival.
This season, he is averaging 14.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game while logging 35.9 minutes on the floor across 43 games.
Despite the team’s rising payroll concerns, the Rockets seem to view VanVleet as a central figure moving forward, and both parties are eager to secure a deal that ensures his continued role in Houston’s long-term plans.
