The Golden State Warriors (24-23) stunned the Oklahoma City Thunder (37-9) on Wednesday night, winning 116-109 despite an incredible 52-point performance from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 21 points, including a clutch 3-pointer with 1:52 remaining.
Gilgeous-Alexander continued his scorching form, dropping 17 points in the first 8:10 of the game. He shot 16-for-29 from the field and converted 18 of his 21 free throws. The Thunder guard also scored 21 of his team’s 34 points in the opening quarter, making it clear he was ready to carry Oklahoma City.
Curry, who sat out Tuesday’s win over the Jazz to rest his knees, started slow but heated up in the second quarter. After missing his first five attempts, Curry found his rhythm, hitting a 3-pointer early in the second period. His scoring helped keep the Warriors competitive, as they erased an early deficit.
Andrew Wiggins played a crucial role in Golden State’s victory, contributing 27 points. Wiggins was efficient, making 10 of 17 field goals, including five of eight from beyond the arc. The forward’s hot shooting was vital, especially as the Warriors faced off against one of the best teams in the West.
Kevon Looney and Gary Payton II provided solid support, with Looney contributing 18 points off the bench and Payton adding 15 points and nine rebounds. Payton’s defensive presence also helped stifle Oklahoma City’s offense at key moments.
The Warriors benefitted from a strong team performance, including Curry passing Ray Allen for 27th place on the NBA’s career scoring list. Golden State’s balanced attack helped them fend off Gilgeous-Alexander’s explosive night and secure the win.
Despite Gilgeous-Alexander’s efforts, Oklahoma City struggled with their shooting. The Thunder shot just 40.4% from the field and 23.1% from three-point range. Isaiah Joe was the next highest scorer for Oklahoma City, contributing 17 points, but the Thunder couldn’t generate enough offense to overcome the Warriors’ efforts.
Injuries were a concern for the Thunder, with Alex Caruso spraining his left ankle during the game. Oklahoma City’s depth will be tested as they continue their quest for the top spot in the Western Conference.
