The Sacramento Kings are reportedly being encouraged to entertain trade offers for their star point guard, De’Aaron Fox, following breaking news from Shams Charania on Tuesday afternoon. Discussions surrounding a potential trade have already commenced in response to Charania’s update.
On Tuesday evening, Charania elaborated, “The Sacramento Kings have gotten dozens of calls in the last seven or eight hours since I reported this story. Fox and his representation, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, they have a strategic destination in mind as his potential landing spot ahead of his free agency in 2026. And I’m told the San Antonio Spurs are at top that list of preferred destinations.
“And why that matters is because this is a complicated situation because De’Aaron Fox becomes a free agent in 2026, so wherever he might land, that team will want to know whether he’ll be able to stay long-term. Whether that team is going to have a chance to keep him. And, overall, the timing on all this is important because De’Aaron Fox has shown time and time again not a willingness to stay in Sacramento long-term.”
Currently, Fox is under contract for one more season, set to earn $37 million during the 2025-26 season. Given his established performance, teams interested in acquiring him will likely weigh the risk of a short-term stay against his potential to commit beyond his current deal.
The San Antonio Spurs, identified as Fox’s preferred trade destination, are in a favorable position to engage in negotiations. They possess seven tradeable first-round picks and hold swap rights for up to three additional selections.
Notably, they also have the right to swap Sacramento’s first-round pick in 2031. This makes San Antonio a uniquely well-equipped franchise to potentially make a strong bid for Fox’s services while positioning themselves as a long-term contender.
