The Los Angeles Lakers could potentially reunite with former draft pick Lonzo Ball ahead of the February 6 trade deadline. According to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, speaking on Hoops Tonight with Jason Timpf, Ball’s name is reportedly on the Lakers’ radar as they look to bolster their roster for the second half of the season.

Buha explained why Ball might be an appealing option for Los Angeles. “Depending on the price, if you could get him for a second or two seconds, I think that’s an interesting swing,” he said, via Paul Kasabian of Bleacher Report. Ball’s versatility on both ends of the court was noted as a key factor, with his 6’6” frame allowing him to guard multiple positions.

Ball returned to action this season after missing more than two years due to a knee injury. However, he has struggled to regain his previous form, averaging career-lows of 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 20.5 minutes per game. Despite the diminished production, his potential as a secondary ball-handler, playmaker, and spot-up shooter makes him an intriguing trade target.

Drafted by the Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick in 2017, Ball played two seasons in Los Angeles before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in the blockbuster deal that brought Anthony Davis to the Lakers.

Ball is currently on the final year of a four-year, $80 million contract with the Chicago Bulls, who have struggled to find consistency this season. With the Bulls sitting at 10th in the Eastern Conference, Chicago may look to shed Ball’s expiring deal for draft capital or a younger player.

Buha also compared Ball’s potential role to that of Bruce Brown, emphasizing his ability to guard twos and threes in a switching defensive scheme. Offensively, Ball could provide the Lakers with a much-needed boost off the bench, offering floor spacing and facilitating opportunities for the team’s stars.
