Mitchell scores 33 as Cavaliers dominate Suns

Donovan Mitchell delivered a stellar performance, scoring 33 points, including 23 in the second half, to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a commanding 118-92 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday. Cleveland improved to 36-6, solidifying their position atop the NBA standings and continuing their historic start to the season.

The Cavaliers showcased their depth despite missing three key rotational players. Evan Mobley, Isaac Okoro, and Caris LeVert were sidelined with injuries, but Cleveland’s supporting cast stepped up. Darius Garland contributed 16 points and seven assists.

Jarrett Allen provided a strong inside presence with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while veteran Tristan Thompson grabbed a season-high 10 boards off the bench. Cleveland dominated the glass, outrebounding Phoenix 50-34 and recording 15 offensive rebounds that led to second-chance points.

The Suns, now 21-21, struggled to find rhythm against Cleveland’s top-ranked defense. Kevin Durant led Phoenix with 23 points, while Devin Booker was held to just 15 points, turning the ball over six times. Phoenix guard Bradley Beal returned after missing two games due to an ankle sprain but managed only five points in 25 minutes.

Cleveland’s perimeter shooting played a significant role in their victory. The Cavaliers hit 19 three-pointers, shooting 41.3% from beyond the arc, with Mitchell and Garland combining for seven makes. Meanwhile, the Suns made 10 triples but shot just 38.5% from deep.

The Cavaliers entered the game with a 21-2 home record and a 13-1 mark against Western Conference opponents. They wasted no time asserting control, building a double-digit lead in the first half and extending it to 26 points by the final buzzer.

Phoenix saw its recent momentum disrupted after winning five of their previous six games. The Suns committed 17 turnovers, leading to 21 points for Cleveland.

Cleveland’s depth proved critical in the absence of Mobley. Georges Niang added eight points and six rebounds off the bench, while Sam Merrill and Jaylon Tyson combined for 20 points, hitting four three-pointers.
