Naji Marshall has been issued a four-game suspension, while Jusuf Nurkic will face a three-game suspension for their respective roles in a heated on-court altercation.
Additionally, PJ Washington has been penalized with a one-game suspension for escalating the situation during the same incident. These disciplinary measures were announced following a thorough review by the league.
The altercation occurred with 9:02 remaining in the third quarter during the Mavericks’ 98-89 win over the Suns at Footprint Center on December 27.
It began innocuously enough when Jusuf Nurkic committed an offensive foul, but events quickly spiraled out of control. Tensions boiled over as Nurkic and Naji Marshall exchanged heated words before the physical confrontation began.
The conflict intensified when Nurkic aggressively swung his arm, striking Marshall on his head. In response, Marshall retaliated by throwing a punch that connected directly with Nurkic’s face, escalating the situation further.
As officials and players attempted to intervene and restore order on the court, PJ Washington entered the fray, exacerbating the situation by forcefully shoving Nurkic to the floor.
The shove further heightened the chaos, drawing the attention of officials, who immediately ejected all three players – Marshall, Nurkic, and Washington – for their roles in the incident. Each player was also assessed a technical foul for their unsportsmanlike conduct.
However, the discord did not end on the court. Following the game, as players headed to the locker rooms, Naji Marshall reportedly attempted to confront Nurkic again in the hallway outside the locker rooms.
This continuation of hostilities underscored the severity of the incident and further justified the league’s disciplinary actions.
