Los Angeles Lakers veteran Anthony Davis sustained a left ankle sprain during the first quarter of Wednesday night’s game against the Golden State Warriors.

The injury occurred when Davis, who has a history of foot-related issues and has been managing plantar fasciitis in the same foot for weeks (according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic), awkwardly rolled his ankle on a non-contact play.

After initially being listed as questionable to return, the Lakers later ruled him out for the remainder of the game, as confirmed by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

While Davis’s early exit raised alarms given his injury history, the initial prognosis appears relatively optimistic.

The nine-time All-Star was seen walking without additional support after the game and is considered day-to-day, with a re-evaluation scheduled before the Lakers’ next contest against the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

Head coach JJ Redick and the team will be hoping for a quick recovery as the player continues to play a pivotal role in the Lakers’ aspirations this season.

This injury adds to Davis’s growing list of health concerns this year, including a left shoulder contusion that had him listed as questionable before Wednesday’s game.

Despite facing criticism throughout his career for missing significant time, Davis has demonstrated improved durability over the past two seasons. He appeared in 76 games during the 2023-24 campaign and, until Wednesday, had only missed one full game so far this season.

The Lakers’ injury woes extended beyond L.A.’s defensive anchor in this game. Starting guard D’Angelo Russell was ruled out with a sprained left thumb after being listed as questionable.

The team also entered the matchup without multiple key frontcourt players, including Jarred Vanderbilt, Christian Wood, and Jaxson Hayes, who are all sidelined with injuries.

These absences forced Redick to adopt a small-ball strategy, shifting LeBron James to center – a role he has occasionally embraced in high-stakes situations.

Additionally, two-way player Christian Koloko contributed nine minutes at the center position, showcasing the Lakers’ reliance on depth in the face of mounting challenges.

Despite these setbacks, the Lakers fought to stay competitive, reflecting the resilience that has defined their season so far. The team’s ability to adapt has been put to the test, with injuries to key players requiring significant lineup adjustments.

However, the versatile big’s availability remains a central concern, as his two-way dominance anchors the team on both ends of the floor.

With the season still young but every game crucial in the Western Conference playoff race, the Lakers will be closely monitoring Davis’s recovery timeline.

The front office and coaching staff know that keeping him healthy is essential not just for short-term success but also for sustaining momentum throughout a grueling campaign.
