Speculation around the Los Angeles Lakers’ interest in Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine continues to linger, but a deal remains unlikely.

According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the trade pieces required to acquire LaVine don’t align for both sides, and the Lakers remain firm on keeping key players like Austin Reaves.

LaVine, a two-time All-Star, is averaging 21.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game this season while shooting 49.8% from the field.

Despite his scoring prowess, his hefty contract complicates trade discussions. The 29-year-old is set to earn $43 million this season, with escalating salaries in the coming years, including a $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season.

The Lakers, who are seeking roster upgrades to contend in a competitive Western Conference, have prioritized maintaining their core. Reaves, a vital contributor to Los Angeles’ lineup, is reportedly untouchable in any trade scenario, further diminishing the likelihood of a LaVine deal.

While LaVine would provide a scoring boost alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, his contract could hinder the team’s financial flexibility. The Lakers are also wary of parting with draft capital or valuable role players in exchange for a player who might disrupt their long-term plans.

Instead, Los Angeles has shifted its focus to more feasible trade targets. One notable option is Washington Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas, who could address the team’s rebounding and interior defense needs. Valanciunas offers a more budget-friendly contract compared to LaVine and aligns with the Lakers’ immediate priorities.
