Tyronn Lue reveals why he declined Lakers’ coaching offer

Tyronn Lue, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, recently shed light on why he turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching offer in 2019.

Speaking to Stephen A. Smith, Lue cited a lack of respect in contract negotiations and concerns over autonomy as key reasons behind his decision.

The Lakers offered Lue a three-year contract while most championship-winning coaches receive five-year deals. Additionally, the team wanted to dictate the selection of his coaching staff, which Lue found unacceptable.

“For me, being a championship coach… to take a three-year deal when everyone else is getting five-year deals and more money—and then you want to pick my staff as well—I just thought that was a slap in the face,” Lue stated, via HoopsHype.

LeBron James and Rich Paul reportedly offered to step in and advocate for Lue to secure better terms. Lue appreciated their support but ultimately declined. “I want them to respect me. I don’t want to have to go to [LeBron] to get my deal done,” Lue explained, adding that he wanted to be recognized for his abilities without needing external intervention.

Another factor influencing Lue’s decision was loyalty to his former Cavaliers staff, many of whom faced uncertain futures. “I’m a loyal person. For me to take the job and leave my guys behind in Cleveland with no job—guys who would be out of the league—I just couldn’t do that,” he said.

Despite turning down the Lakers, Lue expressed gratitude for the opportunity and has no ill feelings toward the franchise. “The Lakers didn’t do anything wrong. They offered me the job and chose me for it, but it was up to me to take the deal. I respectfully declined,” he said.

Reflecting on the situation, Lue called it a “blessing in disguise,” as it led him to the Clippers. “I’ve built great relationships with Lawrence Frank, Mark Hughes, Trent Redden, and Mr. Ballmer. Honestly, I’m happy to be here,” he added.
