Tom Thibodeau on balance between intensity and keeping players happy: “I give them hugs every day”

New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau had a funny response when asked how he keeps his players happy while being so intense following Monday’s 113-108 road win vs. the Toronto Raptors.

(via SNY):

Reporter: “You are kinda known as one of the most intense coaches in the NBA, for example in nights like tonight and tough wins like that. How do you find the right balance between being hard to the players, but at the same time, keeping them happy?”

Thibodeau: “I give them hugs every day. No, I think you want the right players and you want to be truthful. I think you build trust with the truth, and we’ve got a great group of guys to work with. So, just be honest. And we want to understand why we win, why we lose, and we always have the belief that we could do things better. So if we get everyone working together, good things are going to come from that. And then if we play as a team, it’s a team game. So we want to have a five-man offense, five-man defense. And when you do that, I think it’s enjoyable for everyone when everyone’s participating in the team and sacrificing and putting the team first. So, we’ve got great character on our team.”
