Juancho and Diagne Duel As Barcelona Top Estudiantes

Dracs Supporters Club

On Sunday afternoon Barcelona cruised to an 89-67 win over a struggling Estudiantes team in the ACB.

The only real saving grace for Estudiantes was that their young gun Juancho Hernangomez led scoring for the visitors with 13 points. Nothing spectacular but a good showing for the youngster averaging 10.9 points in the league this season. Hernangomez didn’t hesitate to shoot from long range and put away all three of his attempts. But only scored two of his five two point attempts, although one of them was a nice put-back basket in the first quarter.

The other was a quick and efficient dunk which was a nice response from the young star-to-be to a powerful two handed slam from Moussa Diagne off a Pau Ribas bounce pass. The highlight of the game was this mini duel that took place between the two young players as Diagne also managed a block on Hernangomez earlier in the second quarter.

Estudiantes managed an OK start with game being tied at 11 in the opening minutes but before the first quarter was out they allowed Barcelona to go on a 9-0 run, ending the quarter 10 points behind. Barcelona increased their lead in the next two quarters before maintaining their 22 point margin in the final quarter, never giving Estudiantes any real hope of a comeback.

Despite this Javier Salgado and Brandon Thomas got an A for effort in the third and fourth quarters as they hustled to get open shots for themselves and others with varying degrees of success. Thomas in particular really threw himself into it coming up with three second half steals.

Ante Tomic got a quiet 16 points off 70% shooting whilst veteran Pau Ribas pipped him on the scoreboard with 17, largely contributed to by his 75% shooting on his four three point attempts.

Barcelona’s win has them on a seven game win streak in the ACB and gives them sole possession of second place in the standings as Real Madrid lost a close game in Vitoria to Baskonia. The result also leaves Estudiantes in the mirrored position of second last in the table.
