Franz Wagner drops 27 points as Magic crush Pelicans

Franz Wagner scored 27 points as the Orlando Magic cruised to a 115-88 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, ending a five-game skid. Wagner’s efficient performance set the pace as Orlando secured its tenth straight home win, a streak dating back to last season.

The Magic (4-6) jumped out early, taking a 24-point lead within the first 18 minutes by converting six dunks, six layups, and four 3-pointers. Wagner’s brother, Mo, added 17 points off the bench, further bolstering Orlando’s offense, which maintained a comfortable lead for most of the game.

New Orleans, playing without six of its top scorers including Zion Williamson, struggled to keep pace. Brandon Boston Jr. led the Pelicans (3-7) with 26 points, while Jose Alvarado chipped in 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Despite their efforts, the Pelicans lacked depth, ultimately suffering their seventh loss in eight games.

After the Magic took a 24-point lead, Boston and Alvarado sparked a 17-1 run in the third quarter, narrowing Orlando’s lead to 10. However, a clutch 3-pointer by Jalen Suggs with 8:36 remaining broke a lengthy field-goal drought for the Magic, helping them pull away for good.

Orlando’s defense stifled New Orleans’ comeback attempts, holding the Pelicans to 37.6% shooting from the field and limiting their scoring opportunities. Orlando’s bench also played a significant role, combining for 59 points and outmatching the depleted New Orleans roster.

For the Pelicans, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored 12 points while Brandon Ingram, limited to 26 minutes, added 11 points and five assists. Ingram’s struggles were compounded by turnovers, as New Orleans gave up 15 possessions.

The Magic managed to survive a 3-point shooting slump, finishing 8-for-32 from deep, while making up for it with points in the paint.

Wagner’s performance not only led Orlando’s offense but also showcased his versatility, adding five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. His scoring efficiency allowed the Magic to maintain momentum and avoid another late-game collapse.

The Pelicans were missing Williamson, CJ McCollum, and Trey Murphy III, among others, with injuries disrupting their lineup.
