The Boston Celtics have waived guard Lonnie Walker IV, who was attempting to secure a spot on the team’s roster for the upcoming NBA season. Walker, who signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Boston this offseason, now finds himself without a team as the Celtics move forward with final roster decisions.
NBA insider Shams Charania reported the news on X, stating, “The Boston Celtics are waiving guard Lonnie Walker IV, sources tell ESPN. Walker averaged 7.3 points in 16.4 minutes per game in Celtics preseason.”
Walker, a 25-year-old guard, has developed a reputation for his tenacity and willingness to battle for a place in the league. After stints with multiple NBA teams, including the Brooklyn Nets last season, Walker continues to push for a long-term role in the league. During his time with the Nets, he averaged 9.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, offering solid production off the bench.
Originally drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the 18th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Walker spent his first four seasons in San Antonio. He then joined the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2022-23 season before moving on to the Nets.
In Boston, Walker was vying for a roster spot amid a crowded backcourt that features All-Star Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard. His preseason performance, averaging 7.3 points, was respectable, but it wasn’t enough to earn him a place on the Celtics’ regular-season roster. With limited roster spots available and the team opting for other options, Boston’s decision to waive Walker leaves him searching for another opportunity to showcase his skills.
Though he has been waived, Walker’s Exhibit 10 contract allows him to potentially join the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate, where he could continue to develop his game. The Celtics could also retain his rights for a future call-up if needed. However, given his experience and past performances, it’s possible that other NBA teams might express interest in signing the former Spurs guard.
