Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is not concerned about Klay Thompson’s shooting struggles during the preseason. The veteran sharpshooter, who joined the Mavericks this offseason, has been having difficulty finding his rhythm on the court.
In two preseason games, Thompson is averaging just 5 points per game, with 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while shooting a low 16.7% from the field. His three-point shooting has also been uncharacteristic, as he has managed to hit only 27.3% of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Despite these numbers, Kidd remains confident in Thompson’s ability to turn things around. Speaking to the media, Kidd highlighted Thompson’s work ethic and his importance to the Mavericks’ system. “He’s still a superstar, a future Hall of Famer, and he plays the game the right way,” Kidd said, via Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal. He emphasized that the shooting guard’s leadership and championship experience are assets the team needs this season.
Kidd also noted that Thompson is adjusting to a new team and system. After spending over a decade with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson is learning the Mavericks’ style of play. “It’s preseason,” Kidd reminded reporters. “He’s working his way through with a new group from both the defensive end and the offensive end.”
Thompson, a four-time NBA champion, is no stranger to adversity. He has faced multiple injuries over the last few years, including a torn Achilles and ACL, which kept him off the court for two consecutive seasons.
The Mavericks are hoping Thompson will provide a strong veteran presence alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving as they look to contend in the highly competitive Western Conference. Thompson’s shooting is expected to complement the playmaking abilities of Dallas’ star guards, and his defense will be an added bonus.
