Insider: Zion Williamson primed for big season

Zion Williamson appears poised for a breakout year, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. He revealed during The Pat McAfee Show that the New Orleans Pelicans star is in great shape and has impressed both the team’s staff and his teammates in training camp. Williamson, often hampered by injuries in past seasons, is finally entering the season in top physical condition.

“Everyone around the Pelicans believes he’s primed for a big season,” Charania said. “In past years, at this point in training camp or early in the season, there’s always been an injury or something holding him back. But now, he’s playing himself into conditioning and already looks great. He’s focused and ready to go.”

Williamson has struggled with health and conditioning issues throughout his career, but Charania highlighted how this year is different. The 24-year-old worked closely with the Pelicans’ staff over the summer, a move that was critical in getting him to this level. “There hasn’t been a single NBA season where he’s come into training camp and looked this dominant,” Charania added.

Zion’s improved conditioning and focus have given the Pelicans high hopes for the upcoming season. The team plans to use Williamson in a hybrid role. His physical dominance is expected to be a key asset for New Orleans as they push for playoff contention.

Last season, Williamson played in 70 games—the most of his career—averaging 22.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. His durability will be crucial as the Pelicans aim to build around their star forward and make a deep postseason run.

In his first preseason game ahead of the 2024-25 season, Williamson played 19 minutes in a win over the Orlando Magic. He contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, showcasing his readiness to take on a larger role this year.
