Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards recently picked Luka Doncic over NBA legend Larry Bird in a one-on-one matchup. The comments came during a recent interview where Edwards was asked to choose winners in hypothetical contests between basketball stars, past and present.
When asked who would win between prime Doncic and prime Bird, Edwards confidently chose the Dallas Mavericks’ superstar. “I’m going Luka,” Edwards said.
Edwards also weighed in on several other matchups. He picked Tracy McGrady over Paul George, Rajon Rondo over Chris Paul, and Kevin Durant over Carmelo Anthony.
His response favoring Doncic over Bird drew the most attention, given the high regard in which Bird is held. Bird, a three-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer, dominated the league in the 1980s with his all-around game and unmatched basketball IQ. Meanwhile, Doncic, a five-time All-Star, is widely regarded as one of the NBA’s brightest talents today, known for his playmaking and scoring ability.
Earlier in the offseason, Edwards had already stirred controversy with his comments about past NBA players, saying that Michael Jordan was the only player from the previous era who had true skill.
